Burlesque has been a word used since the 17th century to describe a type of theatre during the Victorian era. Burlesque shows were focused on making a joke or mockery of Victorian prudery, performed by a female cast. The women were risqué for the Victorian era, when compared to all the ruffles used to hide the female form. Scandalous.
